John was born
in 1919 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, a town not
far from the Alaskan border. He was educated in England
and during his war service was awarded the British Empire
Medal (BEM). He became a dentist, emigrated with his wife,
Eddie, to Australia, had his own practice on Kangaroo Island,
and taught at the School of Dental Therapy in Hobart from
1967.
John s autobiography Showers
on Thursday encompasses
growing up in a small English market town, cycling with the
Reynard Wheelers, and World War II experiences in North Africa
and Europe. As a paratrooper in the 16th Parachute
Field Ambulance, John saw action in Tunisia, Sicily and Holland. At
the Battle of Arnhem he was taken prisoner by the Germans.
Liberated
by the Russians after 8 months in the Neubrandenberg
POW camp, he walked 120 kilometres to rejoin allied forces
in the form of advanced American troops at Wittenberge.
