The Diary lay
in the bottom drawer. Intuitively aware that one day the
copperplate
copy might become a living record of a teenager in a past
era, Diane transferred it, word for word, into typescript
and later onto her computer.................
The workplace in
1952 was still a man's world where women in top positions
were rarities. Sexual harassment was the order of the day
- good clean fun to male bosses, flattering and exciting to
teenage female clerks and secretaries. Diane
romps through the year, commenting favourably and caustically
on everything and everyone, including herself.
This is a revealing
glimpse of a lost, romantic age. The spareness and vigour
of the writing should appeal to young and old for its broad
perspective, natural wit and sheer joie de vivre!
