7
stages
of
publishing with Maygog
Stage
1: Preliminary assessment
A submission is assessed for suitability for our lists, providing
the AUD$20 Application Fee has been paid (see Payment
Methods). Accepted applicants progress to Stage 2. Rejected
submissions will be returned with a letter of explanation as to
why they were not acceptable, providing self addressed envelope
and postage is included for mailed copy.
Stage
2: Set - up
An accepted
author is assigned an editor and technical manager to work with
in order to shape the manuscript for the publication process. These
experts act as interpreters, guiding authors to reach their readers
and steering them through the technicalities of editing.
A fee is negotiated
with the author to cover editing and set-up activities prior
to proofing and printing
(Stage 5). Negotiation with the author(s) is necessary for long
books of over 100,000 words. Special conditions may apply to
authors
who share in a work (e.g. short stories, children's books, and
technical books).
Stage
3: Production forecast
An estimate is made of the number of pages, text format, cover design
and the number of books in the first print run. This will determine
the cost of printing and the retail and wholesale pricing. Authors
should factor in 20 extra copies, 10 copies to be sent to libraries
and reviewers and 10 complimentary copies.
Stage 4: Illustrations (optional)
If illustrations are desirable, and can be inserted by Maygog technical
department, there may be no extra charge. However, if an artist
is engaged by the author, the artist's fees are the responsibility
of the author.
Stage
5: Printing (and final proofing)
Printing costs must be borne by the author. Authors are advised
of costs and print runs during Stage 3. Prior
to the full production run the printer produces a proof. A professional
proof reader will check the proof carefully. Presenting
the work to best advantage may be exacting and tedious. Good cooperation
between Maygog and author(s) is necessary here!
Authors are asked
to proof read their own proofs as well.
Stage
6: Marketing
Authors will have the opportunity of discussing a possible marketing
strategy in order to market works advantageously.
Stage
7: Distribution
Bookshops and distributors'
margins are a significant part of the book price. Bookshop margins
are usually 40% of the retail price before GST. Distributors can
vary between 15% and 25% of the retail price depending on the distribution
arrangements.
